Mothers Against Drunk Driving MADD Ohio Serving residents of Ohio |
About UsFounded in 1980 by a woman whose daughter was killed by a repeat drunk driving offender, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, grassroots organization with more than 600 affiliates and three million members and supporters nationwide. Mission & GoalsMADD is the nation's leader in the fight against drunk driving. Through the work of dedicated volunteers and supporters, drunk driving fatalities have declined by about 40 percent since MADD's founding. More than 2,300 anti-drunk driving laws have been passed, public awareness is rising and thousands of drunk driving victims have received assistance. In 1997, MADD met a goal, three years early, to reduce the proportion of alcohol-related traffic fatalities 20 percent by the year 2000. However, the fight is not over. In 1995, MADD announced its support of a national goal to reduce the number of alcohol-related traffic fatalities to no more than 11,000 by the year 2005. Strengthening LawsMADD activists are working continually to strengthen existing drunk driving laws and to adopt new ones. Since MADD was founded, more than 2,300 anti-drunk driving laws have been passed nationwide, including the federal 21 Minimum Drinking Age Law and the most recent .08 BAC law. MADD also has helped pass "Zero Tolerance" laws which prohibit youth under 21 from driving with any measurable amount of alcohol in their blood system. Helping VictimsMADD is the largest crime victim's assistance organization in the world. Bereaved families and injured victims of drunk driving crashes may call MADD's victim helpline, 1-877-MADD-HELP, to reach trained staff or volunteers who can provide immediate emotional support as well as guidance through the criminal justice system. MADD also offers a wide range of free literature to victims and their families. |
